After the reported second attempted assassination of former President Trump on Sunday, most of the world’s leaders remained silent, but three spoke out and mentioned Trump’s name: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Referring to his wife Sara, Netanyahu, whose close relationship with the most supportive American president Israel has ever known was clear during Trump’s tenure, stated on X, “Sara and I were shocked by the second assassination attempt against President Trump and were relieved to hear that it too failed. But we should not rely on luck. We send our best wishes to Donald and Melania along with our hopes that all measures will be taken to ensure that such deadly attacks on a candidate for the US presidency will be foiled in advance.”
Orban, another strong supporter of Trump, echoed, “It is clear that President Trump’s life is in danger, until his victory. We are praying for you, Mr. President!”
Ukrainian President Zelensky stated, “I am glad to hear that Donald Trump is safe and unharmed. My best wishes to him and his family. It’s good that the suspect in the assassination attempt was apprehended quickly. This is our principle: the rule of law is paramount and political violence has no place anywhere in the world. We sincerely hope that everyone remains safe.”
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer of the leftist Labour Party did not mention Trump’s name, only saying, “I was very worried by the news about this attempt. Looks like an assassination attempt, very, very worried about it. Obviously there’s now an investigation going on, so I won’t say much more about the details, but I think it is really important that we’re all very, very clear that violence has no part to play at all in any political process.”
When Netanyahu spoke before Congress in July, only days after the first assassination attempt on Trump’s life in Butler, Pennsylvania, he stated:
I want to thank President Trump for his leadership in brokering the historic Abraham Accords. Like Americans, Israelis were relieved that President Trump emerged safe and sound from that dastardly attack on him, dastardly attack on American democracy. There is no room for political violence in democracies. I also want to thank President Trump for all the things he did for Israel, from recognizing Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights, to confronting Iran’s aggression, to recognizing Jerusalem as our capital and moving the American embassy there. That’s Jerusalem, our eternal capital, never to be divided again.
In July, Orban said of Trump, “He is the man of peace. Under his four-year term he did not initiate a single war, and he did a lot in order to create peace in old conflicts in very complicated areas of the world.”
