A passenger plane carrying 61 people crashed in Brazil on Friday, according to reports and videos that circulated online.
The two-engine ATR 72 model aircraft operated by Brazilian airline VoePass was traveling from Cascavel to Guarulhos Airport when it crashed in a residential area of Brazil’s Sao Paulo state.
The airline initially said in a statement that there were 58 passengers on board and four crew members. In a revised statement, the airline said that there were 61 people on board and that all of them died during the crash.
“VoePass flight 2283 departed Cascavel at 14:58 UTC (11:58 am local time) and climbed to a cruising altitude of 17,000 feet 24 minutes into flight,” said Flightradar24. “The aircraft continued to cruise toward São Paulo at 17,000 feet until 16:21 UTC when ADS-B indicates a brief loss in altitude, followed a brief gain in altitude, followed by a steep and terminal descent.”
The live global flight tracking service said that the plane fell at a descent rate of -24,064 feet per minute.
Footage was captured of the moment that the plane fell to the ground and erupted in a fireball.
“Voepass has taken all measures to support those involved,” the company said. “There is still no confirmation of how the accident occurred or the current situation of the people on board.”
Footage of the aftermath showed the plane on the street engulfed in flames.
