Former President Donald Trump’s campaign team trolled President Joe Biden over the possibility that he could drop out of the race entirely, claiming it was “unfair” to commit to a vice presidential debate when no one could be certain who the candidate would be.
Wall Street Journal White House reporter Ken Thomas posted the news Wednesday afternoon on X that CBS had set a date for a potential match-up between current Vice President Kamala Harris and Trump’s newly-selected running mate, Senator JD Vance (R-OH).
“Biden-Harris campaign official says VP Harris has accepted a date of Mon Aug. 12th for the CBS VP debate with JD Vance,” he said.
Later on Wednesday afternoon, the Trump campaign released an official response: “We don’t know who the Democrat nominee for Vice President is going to be, so we can’t lock in a date before their convention. To do so would be unfair to Gavin Newsom, JB Pritzker, Gretchen Whitmer, or whoever Kamala Harris picks as her running mate.”
Ever since President Biden stumbled through his late-June debate with Trump, calls for him to bow out of the race — from members of his own party — have grown louder and louder. A series of gaffe-filled interviews later, and the number of Democrats who want Biden replaced on the presidential ticket has risen to nearly two-thirds, according to a recent AP-NORC poll. Actor George Clooney — who just did a fundraiser for Biden a month earlier — wrote an op-ed saying that it was time for Biden to go, and even Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) called on the president to step aside on Wednesday.
Trump, on the other hand, told Fox News host Sean Hannity that he thought Biden might stick it out: “[He] may very well stay, and he’s got an ego, and he doesn’t want to quit. … He’s going to feel badly about himself for a long time. It’s hard to give it up that way, the way where they’re trying to force him out.”
Biden has repeatedly vowed to stay in the race, but did concede during a recent BET interview that he would consider dropping out of the race “if I had some medical condition that emerged.” A short time after that interview excerpt circulated, the White House confirmed that Biden had once again tested positive for COVID.
