Top Republicans have started to push President Joe Biden to resign from office immediately after he announced on Sunday that he was ending his reelection campaign.
The 81-year-old said in a letter addressed to the public: “I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”
Biden did not give a specific reason for why he decided to end his campaign, even though it was driven mainly by his declining poll numbers against former President Donald Trump.
The president has displayed serious signs of cognitive decline during his time in office, which were on full display during his disastrous debate performance late last month against Trump.
Numerous top Republicans have started to call on Biden to resign from office immediately given his cognitive impairment.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said in statement that the Democrat Party “forced the Democrat nominee off the ballot, just over 100 days before the election.”
“Having invalidated the votes of more than 14 million Americans who selected Joe Biden to be the Democrat nominee for president, the self-proclaimed ‘party of democracy’ has proven exactly the opposite,” he said. “The party’s prospects are no better now with Vice President Kamala Harris, who co-owns the disastrous policy failures of the Biden Administration.”
After highlighting Harris’ calamitous record as vice president, which included overseeing the worst illegal immigration crisis in American history, Johnson called on Biden to resign.
“If Joe Biden is not fit to run for President, he is not fit to serve as President,” he said. “He must resign the office immediately. November 5 cannot arrive soon enough.”
Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT) noted that many Democrats have come forward “with stories that suggest Joe Biden has a condition that is getting worse, not better.”
“If Joe Biden is no longer capable of running for re-election, he is no longer capable of serving as President,” Daines said. “Being President is the hardest job in the world, and I no longer have confidence that Joe Biden can effectively execute his duties as Commander-in-Chief.”
“It is out of concern for our country’s national security that I am formally calling on President Biden to resign from office,” he concluded. “It has also been striking that none of the Senate Democrats who served with Vice President Harris have called for her to replace President Biden. This leads me to believe they think she is unqualified to serve as Commander-in-Chief.”
Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS) posted on X: “If Joe Biden is unable to serve another term, then he must resign right now. If he’s unfit to campaign, he should not have the nuclear codes – it’s that simple.”
