Veepstakes Contender J.D. Vance Assails Manhattan Prosecution Against Trump: ‘They Won’t Even Specify The Crime’

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), who is part of the veepstakes this election cycle, argued on Sunday that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is running a politically motivated case against former President Donald Trump.

During an interview on CNN, anchor Dana Bash asked Vance if Trump should be treated differently amid his legal battles because he is a former president again running for the White House.

“I don’t think he should be treated differently at all, Dana, but I certainly think he is being treated differently,” Vance said. “The only thing that Alvin Bragg, the New York prosecutor’s team thinks Donald Trump did wrong is that he ran for president in 2024 and he looks to be on the cusp of victory. That is the only thing that this is ultimately about.”

Trump faces 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to allegedly cover up payments, including to adult film actress Stormy Daniels, in a bid to conceal damaging information as part of a “catch-and-kill” scheme to influence the 2016 election. He has pleaded not guilty, and the trial is ongoing.

Vance, who appeared with other potential Trump running mates at Mar-a-Lago last weekend, argued that prosecutors have a weak case based on a legal theory that some experts have suggested is on questionable footing because of a dubious legal theory used to gussy up misdemeanor charges to the felony level.

“If you look at the underlying argument of the case, they can’t even identify what it is that Donald Trump did. They said he committed a paperwork violation in the service of a crime, but they won’t even specify the crime that he allegedly committed,” Vance said. “And I think that when you look at all of these attacks on Donald Trump, you have to be honest with yourself and say, this is not about law and this is not about justice.”

With polls showing Trump outperforming President Joe Biden less than six months before Election Day, Vance insisted the New York prosecution and other legal cases levied against the former president are meant to be a distraction.

“This is about the fact that President Joe Biden has a failed record as commander in chief and leader of this country, and the Democrats can’t talk about that,” Vance said. “So what they’re doing is putting these trials out there and saying, focus on this, not on the fact that the world is on fire and the fact that you have gotten poorer under the presidency of Joe Biden.”
