New York City Democratic Mayor Eric Adams generated controversy this week during an interview with a local television station when he said that one of the things that makes New York City the “greatest city on the globe” is the possibility people could experience a terrorist attack there.
The moment happened during an interview with host Dan Mannarino on WPIX-TV’s “PIX on Politics” when Adams was asked to describe 2023 in one word.
“Mr. Mayor, we’ve come to the end of what was a very eventful 2023,” Mannarino said. “So when you look at the totality of the year, if you had to describe it, and it’s tough to do, in one word, what would that word be? And tell me why.”
“New York,” Adams responded. “This is a place where every day you wake up, you could experience everything from a plane crashing into our Trade Center to a person who’s celebrating a new business that’s open. This is a very, very complicated city, and that’s why it’s the greatest city on the globe.”

The September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks was the largest terror attack in world history as nearly 3,000 Americans were murdered on that day. The attacks spurred decades of war in the Middle East that cost trillions of dollars and thousands of American lives.
Online, people expressed shock over Adams’ bizarre comment.
“This may go down as the worst answer of 2023,” said sports writer Jack McGuire.
Washington Post reporter Josh Dawsey wrote, “I’m not sure that selling New York as a place where you can experience 9/11 is the best argument that can be made for the world’s greatest city…”
“Seriously, what?” asked writer Ian Miles Cheong.
