New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu said during an interview this week that he has narrowed down the list of candidates who he is considering endorsing for his state’s first in the nation Republican presidential primary early next year.
Sununu said that he will likely be making his endorsement after Thanksgiving and that he will be choosing from Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.
“Right now those three candidates, I think for most folks in the Republican Party, have proved themselves to be the top choices” in addition to former President Donald Trump, Sununu said. He praised the debate performances of the three candidates while calling pharmaceutical executive Vivek Ramaswamy’s performance “a bit embarrassing” and said Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) “wasn’t incredibly inspiring.”
Sununu took several major shots at Ramaswamy during an interview, saying that his debate performance showed “he doesn’t have the temperament to handle the stresses of a public executive position” and that he would be a “poor choice” to be the GOP nominee against President Joe Biden.
The remarks come after post-debate polling showed that the top two performers were Haley and DeSantis, with both each taking the top spot in different polls. Some voters who watched the debate said that Ramaswamy did the worst.
“But to be an effective president, you have to have temperament, you have to have poise, you’ve got to act like you’ve been there,” Sununu said, adding that he believes Ramaswamy “doesn’t know how to run anything, he has no understanding of how to work in the public sphere.”
Sununu was asked in a CBS News interview about Haley putting him on the spot to endorse her at two events over the last week that Sununu attended with her.
“Is it fair to say she’s number one right now on your list?” host Robert Costa asked Sununu.
“No, no. Look, Nikki’s a great friend,” Sununu said. “Ron’s a friend. They’re all friends.”
Christie told reporters that he would not put Sununu on the spot, saying that it would “embarrass him” and he didn’t believe it was the right thing to do.
Sununu also said during the interview that Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds’ recent endorsement of DeSantis will not impact who he chooses to endorse for his state’s primary.
