Argentina elected Javier Milei on Sunday to be the country’s new president starting in just a few weeks.
Milei, a Right-wing libertarian known for appealing to voters by using populist rhetoric, was elected with 56% of the vote over the country’s economic minister, Sergio Massa.
The 53-year-old economist and former television pundit will be sworn into office on December 10 in what is expected to be a strong rightward shift for the country.
Milei has promised to gut approximately half of the federal government’s ministries, including the Ministry of Sports and Tourism; Ministry of Culture; Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development; Ministry of Women, Genders, and Diversity; Ministry of Public Works; Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation; Ministry of Labor, Employment, and Social Security; Ministry of Education; Ministry of Transportation; Ministry of Health; and the Ministry of Social Development.
Milei is a proponent of laissez-faire capitalism, wants to use the U.S. dollar as Argentina’s currency, strongly believes in individual liberties and rights, is opposed to central banking, vigorously opposes climate change policies, supports Israel, dislikes communists and said he would cut off relations with China, and has promised to lead an anti-corruption campaign in the government.
He said he wants to end relations with China because “people aren’t free, they can’t do what they like and when they do, they get killed. I don’t cut deals with Communists.”
“My allies are the United States and Israel and, what’s more, I’ll move the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem,” he affirmed, explaining: “When the ONE [as he refers to God] ordered Moses to break the first tablets of the law, the first word he pronounced was Jerusalem and it was there King David established the capital so the embassy must be transferred from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.”
He also wants to repeal the country’s abortion law that was enacted in 2022, saying: “When you construct on the basis of an incorrect moral principle, the result is filth. How can being able to kill other human beings be a right gained? As a liberal, I believe in the unrestricted right to life based on the defence of life, liberty and property. I defend life, biology says that life begins with conception.”
Milei also strongly opposes social justice initiatives.
“We are at the end of the model of the caste based on that atrocity of where there is a need, there is a right but they’re forgetting that somebody has to pay for that right,” he said. “Its maximum expression is that aberration called social justice which is unjust because it implies unequal treatment in the face of the law.”
Milei appears to hate the political Left, as evidenced by some of his very strong remarks about the political ideology.
“You can’t give s*** leftards an inch. All collectivists, all kinds of collectivists. […] They are s**t!” he reportedly said in an interview. “If you think differently from them they will kill you. This is the point. You can’t give s**t leftists an inch, if you give them an inch they will use it to destroy you.”
“You can’t negotiate with leftards. You don’t negotiate with trash because they will end you!” he continued. “If they — the Left — if it’s one of them, he puts on the [pro-abortion] green scarf and yells about neoliberalism all the time, they hide it. If suddenly there’s a journalist that molests another journalist, they hide it. When it’s one of them, they hide it. They hide all of those aberrations.”
“Now, if you are on the other side, they will ruin you,” he added. “They will kill you, they will throw you everything, they don’t care if they ruin your whole life. Why? Only because you don’t think like them.”
He said that the political Right was superior to the Left in every way imaginable, and so that forces them to use the power of the state to oppress their opponents.
