Shocking bodycam footage shows suspect attacking female cop with a hammer before she shoots him

Connecticut police released bodycam footage from a shocking incident in which a female police officer shot a man numerous times after he lunged at her and attacked her with a hammer.

Middletown Police said that Detective Karli Travis was sent to investigate a complaint about noise and broken glass at a residence in Middletown on Saturday at about 6:33 a.m.

When Travis arrived, she encountered a man who was later identified as 52-year-old Winston Tate. Travis yells at Tate to drop the object in his hand, but he refuses, footage shows.

"Can you put that down?" she asks.

"What?!" he yells.

"Can you put that down, please?" she asks again.

"No!" he yells.

Tate then rushes at Travis and apparently begins swinging his hammer at her. Travis shoots Tate several times and struggles with him as he seemingly continues to attack her.

Tate was able to return to his home after he was shot numerous times and was arrested later when more officers arrived at the scene. He was hospitalized with numerous gunshot wounds.

Middletown Police Chief Erik Costa called Travis a hero and said she had received medical attention but was expected to make a full recovery. An affidavit said she needed stitches and had suffered some bruising from the attack.

“She’s resting comfortably at home. She’s being supported. We’re extremely proud of her,” said Costa.

Tate was charged with attempted first-degree assault, second-degree assault, assault on a police officer, and interfering with police.

A judge increased his bond from $500,000 to $800,000 on Tuesday.

Tate had been previously convicted in 2017 and 2020 of assaulting a peace officer and was on probation on a separate robbery charge when he reportedly attacked Travis.

The longer, 30-second version of the harrowing bodycam footage can he seen here.
