During the first three years of “Saturday Night Live” — way back in the 1970s — the cast included John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner, Dan Aykroyd, Jane Curtin, and Laraine Newman.
They’d all go on to become mega-stars, but back then, the 20-something nobodies were known as the “Not Ready For Primetime Players.”
Even though it’s more than half a century later, you can add one more member to the “Not Ready For Primetime Players” — Vice President Kamala Harris.
Well known for her word salads — the former federal prosecutor seems unable to speak extemporaneously — the veep shoved both of her feet into her mouth last week with one of her worst verbal blunders of her vice presidency.
“Understand that across our country, how many people cannot afford to live where they work and have to commute to work, sometimes hours at a time, driving over bridges and roads that are falling apart — what that might mean in terms of a flat tire, what that means in terms of coming out of pocket because your car insurance doesn’t cover it,” Harris said at a private campaign fundraising event in Chicago.
Then she dropped the bombshell. “And the average American is a $400 unexpected expense away from bankruptcy,” she declared.
So hang on. Harris is in some massive mansion surrounded by a bunch of fatcat moneybags trying to persuade them to drop big bucks into Campaign 2024, and she tells them average Americans are just $400 from disaster?
How out of touch could she be?! Does she not realize that the Biden-Harris administration has made things so, with soaring inflation, sky-high gas prices (on their way to $4 again), food prices soaring, and home interest rates the highest since the 1990s?
She clearly doesn’t. In another speech at Drake University in Des Moines, Harris said, “Most Americans are just one unexpected expense away from bankruptcy.”
The White House recently claimed that “Bidenomics” has created more than 13 million jobs, including nearly 800,000 manufacturing jobs. “America has experienced the strongest growth among leading economies since the pandemic. Inflation has consistently declined over the past 11 months, plummeting by more than half,” a statement from the administration declared.
But that’s just half of the story. Biden took office in January 2021, when a gallon of regular gas cost $2.39. Now, the nationwide average is $3.78, according to the AAA. Food prices at grocery stores soared 11% between 2021 and 2022. And car prices? Fuhgedaboutit. New car prices have soared 24%.
Harris’ frank admission to slip past sharp-eyed wags on social media, who commented on the state of the U.S. economy — including one 2024 presidential candidate.
“Yeah, that’s called Bidenomics and it’s a problem,” wrote Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC). “Americans have lost $10,000 in spending power because of the Biden-Harris agenda.”
Another offered a more conspiratorial take.
“And that is EXACTLY where @VP and @Joebiden want most Americans to be. They want you destitute and helpless so that your only chance at survival is government. Democrats want to increase dependency,” one X user wrote.
And one wag put the final nail in Kalama’s declaration.
“Even Kamala Harris thinks Bidenomics is a complete and utter failure!”
