The Biden administration recently announced it would expand the number of foreign nationals admitted into the United States through the CBP One application to nearly 40,000 per month.
The digital application allows foreign nationals to schedule appointments to apply for asylum at ports of entry. Thus far, roughly 80,000 foreign nationals have been allowed into the United States through the CBP One app in just the last four months, but now the Biden administration is increasing appointment openings from 1,000 per day to 1,250 a day.
In May, the app became the primary method for asylum seekers to schedule appointments. The program has been met with criticism from the Right, with Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), blasting it as a “concierge service for illegal immigrants.”
The nearly 40,000 appointments per month do not include a distinct parole program designed specifically for those from Haiti, Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Cuba.
The expansion of the CBP One app comes after the Biden administration announced a rule called the “Circumvention of Lawful Pathways,” which incentives foreign nationals to use the digital process.
The policy has since been challenged by 18 Republican state Attorneys General who contend that the policy does not seek to solve the border crisis but “tries to define the problem away by re-characterizing what would be illegal crossings as ‘lawful pathways.’”
Meanwhile, the Biden administration’s decision to increase the number of CBP One App appointments comes as major cities like Chicago and New York struggle to manage the influx of border crossers into their communities.
The Chicago City Council recently voted to approve $51 million in funding for housing many of the 10,000 foreign nationals who’ve arrived since August 2022, while in New York City, 50 places of worship will begin to shelter foreign nationals.
New York City Democratic Mayor Eric Adams suggested that private citizens may soon be called upon to house migrants in their places of residence.
In addition, an estimated 1.5 million gotaways — illegal immigrants known to be in the country who have yet to be caught — have made it into the United States during the Biden administration. The figure is three times higher than the total number of estimated gotaways for the last three years of the Trump administration.
Meanwhile, a recent poll from CBS News found that 63% of Americans disapprove of Biden’s handling of the United States border, while only 37% say that they approve.
