Republican Florida Congressman Greg Steube said Wednesday that he was cleared to return to work after falling off his roof.
Steube said in an announcement on Twitter Wednesday afternoon that his doctors cleared him to fly, meaning that he would be able to return to Washington, D.C., later this month. Steube fell 25 feet off the roof of his house in Sarasota in January. Despite being confined to his house, Steube has still been an active legislator.
“I’m happy to report my doctor has cleared me to fly,” Steube wrote. “I am looking forward to returning to D.C. later this month!”
Several of Steube’s colleagues sent well wishes to him on Twitter.
“Great news! Looking forward to having you back!” wrote Steube’s Florida colleague, Rep. Neal Dunn (R-FL).
“Great news! Looking forward to having you back,” echoed Rep. Rich McCormick (R-GA).
“Great news,” replied Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN).
“Welcome news,” House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) replied. “Can’t wait to have you back!”
Steube fell 25 feet off a ladder while doing chores around his house on January 18. According to a Fox News report from the time, he was cutting branches from a tree when a branch hit his ladder and caused it to collapse. He was rescued by Darrell Woodie, a delivery driver who also works part-time as a field staffer for Steube’s colleague, Rep. Vern Buchanan, whose district borders his own. Woodie reportedly said he went to Steube’s house to congratulate him on his re-election win, when saw the fall and called 911.
He was hospitalized, which included an overnight stay in the ICU, before he returned home on January 21. After four days at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Steube tweeted a photo of himself at home, still wearing a stabilizing brace around his neck, on a couch with his dogs — and he shared how his recovery was going.
“I am blessed to have a great support team in my wife Jennifer as well as numerous friends and family, including the Steube pups,” he tweeted on January 23. “Grateful for everyone’s prayers and well-wishes as I recover from a fractured pelvis, a punctured lung, and several torn ligaments in my neck.”
“While I will be sidelined in Sarasota for several weeks, I will be carrying out as many of my congressional duties as possible,” he added. “And our D.C. and district staff continue to be readily available to assist Floridians in FL-17.”
“I’m eager to rejoin my colleagues in Washington as soon as possible!” he concluded.
Steube also invited Woodie to be his guest for the State of the Union address in February. “Mr. Woodie called 911 after witnessing my accident and is the epitome of a Good Samaritan!” he tweeted, along with a picture of the two together.
Despite being out of his office, Steube has continued to be an active legislator. He was appointed by McCarthy to serve on the House Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government. He has also introduced several pieces of legislation, most notably the “Safe Storage Lockers for House Office Buildings Act,” which would require the Capitol Police to install storage lockers at all pedestrian entrances to each House Office Building, so that employees can safely store weapons for self-defense.
