Police Charge Grandfather With Fatal Stabbing Of 8-Year-Old Grandson

Police arrested a man Sunday in Texas after he allegedly stabbed his 8-year-old grandson to death.

Police and fire departments responded to a stabbing at around 7:50 a.m. local time at a residence in Richland Hills, Texas, according to an official release from the Richland Hills Police Department. Emergency services arrived on the scene and pronounced that the juvenile victim was dead from his injuries.

Police named 62-year-old Philip Hughes, the victim’s grandfather, as the suspect in the stabbing. Hughes was found near the scene, the release noted. Officers took Hughes into custody on charges of capital murder and transported him to the Joint Detention Center where he’s waiting for arraignment. His mugshot was shared on social media by an NBC5 reporter.

“The Richland Hills Police Department would like to express its condolences to those affected by this senseless tragedy and ask for continued prayers for everyone involved,” the department noted in their release.

Hughes went into custody without incident, the release continued. Police do not believe that there are any other suspects at this time, but the investigation is still active as of Monday morning.

In Texas, capital murder is a first degree felony and is only applicable as a charge in certain cases, which include murdering a person who is 10 years old or younger, according to the Texas Attorney General website.
