President Joe Biden labeled protestors gathered outside an Illinois venue Saturday by while on a campaign stop.
Speaking at a Joliet elementary school, Biden accused Republicans of putting Social Security and Medicare on the “chopping block” while touting the Democrats’ commitment to safeguard those programs for future generations, according to the National Review
“Social security and Medicare are more than government programs, they’re a promise,” Biden declared, per the National Review. “They’re a promise. Work hard and contribute and when the time comes, things will be easier for you. It’s a rock-solid guarantee, an iron-clad commitment. Generations of Americans have counted on it and it works.”
“I love those signs when I came in — socialism. Give me a break, what idiots,” Biden stated to laughter and applause.
Though Biden has attacked Republicans for wanting to cut Social Security and Medicare benefits, there has been no GOP effort to cut either program. On the contrary, Republicans created the largest unilateral Medicare expansion in 2003, while Democrates enacted the two largest partisan Medicare cuts in 2010 and 2022, according to the Daily Beast.
Biden’s criticism refers to Republican Senators Rick Scott of Florida and Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, who recently proposed that Social Security and Medicare receive a reauthorization vote every few years to provide lawmakers an opportunity to update the programs as needed, The Daily Beast reported. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, however, already stated that a new reauthorization requirement for either program would not be a part of a Republican Senate majority agenda, according to the New York Times.
Biden’s trip to Illinois is just one of many campaign stops the president has made as he tries to shore up Democratic support ahead of Tuesday’s midterm elections.
