Homeowner spots man with cordless saw under his truck in middle of night. Man then approaches homeowner — so homeowner shoots him.

 Sure, if it's been said once, it's been said a thousand times: Never bring a knife to gunfight.

Naturally, a whole bunch of other dangerous objects could be used in place of the word "knife," and the warning still would work.

Now, we can add "cordless saw" to it.

What happened?

Multiple people reported hearing gunshots just before 3:30 a.m. Thursday in the 400 block of South Walnut in Wichita, Kansas, the Wichita Eagle reported, citing a news release.

One of the callers said a suspect with a knife was trying to get her into her vehicle when her husband shot the suspect, the paper said.

Police later learned a 29-year-old man heard noises outside his house, after which he grabbed a gun and went to investigate, the Eagle noted.

With that, he discovered a 41-year-old with a cordless saw underneath his truck, police told the paper.

KWCH-TV reported that police said it appeared the suspect with the cordless saw was trying to take the truck's catalytic convertor. The Eagle added that trucks often are easier targets since there's more room for crooks to slide underneath them.

 

The paper also noted that cordless saws often are used to steal catalytic converters, which contain precious metals that can be sold. Such thefts have been rising all over the country in recent years — and TheBlaze has covered related stories that didn't end so well for the thieves.

And the result in this case is that the suspect didn't get away with it, either.

What happened next?

The homeowner ventured outside to talk to the man with the cordless saw, but Wichita police spokesman Trevor Macy said the suspect “moved toward the 29-year-old, who then fired his handgun, striking the suspect,” the Eagle noted.

Police told KWCH the suspect was shot once in the lower body, and as of 10 a.m. Thursday, the suspect remained hospitalized, and the investigation was ongoing.
