Following Thursday’s verdict on the Jussie Smollett trial, Democrats are being called out on social media for their Tweets supporting Smollett and condemning Republicans for spewing “dangerous lies”, racism, and homophobia. Here are the top ten Tweets that helped to fuel public anger and racial divisions following Smollet’s staged hate crime:
- Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Tweeted an emotional reply to a story from Entertainment Tonight which described Smollett’s fake hate crime as a “possible homophobic and racially charged attack”. The news outlet later bowed under the pressure and changed the story’s headline to describe the hoax as “a homophobic, racist attack”.

2. Rashida Tlaib quoted GQ’s story covering Smollett’s staged hate crime in her misguided Tweet:

3. Bernie Sanders joined the swarm of Liberals jumping to Smollett’s defense, Tweeting:

4. Joy-Ann Reid‘s Tweet focused on the “noose” that Smollett tightened around his own neck after the staged attack.

5. Joe Biden took to Twitter while on his campaign trail from his basement, writing,

6. Kamala Harris shared her love for the criminal on Twitter as well, calling him one of the “kindest, most gentle human beings” she knows.

7. Lori Lightfoot Tweeted her support for Smollett, while promoting herself during her campaign for Chicago’s mayor.
“My thoughts and prayers are with #JussieSmollett. Everyone deserves to live safely as their true authentic self in this city. As mayor, I will make sure that, regardless of the victim’s stature, hate crime incidents and complaints are fully investigated.”
8. Senator Cory Booker second-voiced Kamala Harris’ statement that this was a modern-day lynching, and urged Congress to pass the Anti-Lynching bill:

9. Eric Swalwell blamed “careless hate-filled rhetoric”, prompting his followers to openly blame President Trump for causing this fake attack.
