The Wall Street Journal recently published a report claiming that:
The Biden administration is in talks to offer immigrant families that were separated during the Trump administration around $450,000 a person in compensation, according to people familiar with the matter, as several agencies work to resolve lawsuits filed on behalf of parents and children who say the government subjected them to lasting psychological trauma.
The U.S. Departments of Justice, Homeland Security, and Health and Human Services are considering payments that could amount to close to $1 million a family, though the final numbers could shift, the people familiar with the matter said. Most of the families that crossed the border illegally from Mexico to seek asylum in the U.S. included one parent and one child, the people said. Many families would likely get smaller payouts, depending on their circumstances, the people said.
While some, namely the ACLU, are celebrating the decision, many are angered by what they see as the Biden Administration’s betrayal of American citizens in favor of illegal immigrants. One such person is Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Never one to take a punch without fighting back, he’s responded to the Biden Administration’s ludicrous illegal immigrant payout plan, calling it a “slap in the face” and vowing to fight it. Here’s what he said:
I’m very, very concerned about reports, I think it was in The Wall Street Journal, that the Biden administration is going to pay with tax dollars, hundreds of millions of dollars to people who came to our country illegally across the southern border as quote, ‘damages.’ I mean, you think about it, Americans are getting more in their gas bills, they’re getting more in their grocery bills. You’ve had all kinds of really bad policies throughout our country, that has limited freedom. And you’re going to turn around for that, and you’re going to do $475,000 for an individual that came illegally to this country? I’ve seen a lot in my day. I’ve seen a lot that’s happened over the last nine or 10 months that I didn’t think I’d ever see, but this takes the cake. If that is done, that is going to be a slap in the face to every hard-working American who works hard and plays by the rules and it will especially being a slap in the face to people that have immigrated legally to this country. That should not be allowed to stand. It’s wrong. And whatever we can do in Florida to fight back against it, we will do.
If you’d like, you can watch his speech here:
DeSantis isn’t standing alone, other conservative politicians are standing with him against the massive payout. For example, according to Fox News, Senator Mo Brooks (R-AL) had this to say about the Biden Administration’s illegal immigrant payout plan:
“It’s abhorrent and borderline evil, simple as that. You’ve got people who have illegally come into the United States of America, and this administration wants to reward them with taxpayer money for their illegal conduct? That’s crazy.”
Likewise, Blake Masters, running for Senate in Arizona, said:
“They burn our cities down, defund our police and border patrol, destroy our schools, our churches, call half the country evil for voting Republican … and then take our money and do this with it”
JD Vance, another Senate candidate, called the plan “civilizational homicide”
At a time when average Americans are, as DeSantis notes, struggling under the financial weight of interminable lockdowns, rising inflation, soon-to-be higher taxes, and shortages caused by supply chain chaos, President Biden is apparently more focused on aiding illegal immigrants than aiding the citizens he is supposed to represent.
