'Happy birthday to my friend and my brother': Obama sends birthday wishes to Biden as he turns 79 - and thanks him for the 'gift of infrastructure'

Well wishes poured in for Joe Biden on Saturday as the president celebrated turning 79 at his home in Wilmington, Delaware.

'Happy birthday to my friend and my brother,' Barack Obama tweeted on Saturday along with a picture of him with his former vice president. 'Thanks for giving all of us the gift of better infrastructure. Grateful for all you're doing to build this country back better.'

Biden appeared to have a low key birthday, attending mass at St. Joseph on the Brandywine in Wilmington Saturday evening with his daughter Ashley and sister Valerie Biden Owens. He had no other public events on the official schedule.

He will return to the White House on Sunday afternoon and does not have any public events scheduled.

On Friday, Biden was declared 'healthy' and 'fit' for the presidency following an extensive but routine checkup at Walter Reed Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

A number of top Democrats sent the president their congratulations and well wishes.

Vice President Kamala Harris wished him 'a happy and joyous day' on Twitter exactly one months after celebrating her 57th birthday with a surprise party with her staff in Washington, D.C.

'Happy Birthday to the 46th President of the United States, Joe Biden,' former Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe tweeted. 'Thanks for decades of friendship. Hope you and Jill are having a blast today.'

McAuliffe failed to win another attempt for governorship in Virginia earlier this month, even with the backing of Biden. Instead, Republican newcomer Glenn Youngkin bested the establishment Democrat.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tweeted at Biden that 'America is grateful for your heart, your decency, your love of country, your love of people, and your principled leadership and vision to #BuildBackBetter.'

The president received an early birthday gift on Friday when House Democrats managed to pass his massive social welfare bill, known as Build Back Better. The $1.8 trillion package will now move up to the Senate – where it faces uncertainty with a 50-50 split upper chamber.

Following Biden's physical on Friday, White House physician Kevin O'Connor said the president was a 'healthy, vigorous' man who was 'fit to successfully execute the duties of the presidency, to include those as chief executive, head of state and commander in chief.'

Biden is the oldest president in U.S. history by eight years – taking office at age 78. Before that, Donald Trump was the oldest president at age 70 at the time of inauguration.

Also on Friday, Biden participated in the annual tradition of the presidential turkey pardoning ahead of Thanksgiving. He pardoned both turkeys, Peanut Butter and Jelly, this year.
