'Chicago is a war zone': Terrifying video shows machine gun fire erupting on the streets in bloody Thanksgiving weekend of gun violence as three are killed in and another 40 are shot

This it the terrifying moment machine gun shooting erupted on the streets of Chicago in a bloody Thanksgiving weekend of gun violence.

Three people were killed and another 40 were shot over the holiday weekend in the latest surge in violent crime.

Footage posted online shows a man, who does not appear to have a gun, running through the streets of Chicago as machine gun fire erupts nearby.

Hours earlier a man, believed to be in his 20s, was killed in southern Chicago after he was shot several times in the back of his legs. It is not yet know if two incidents were connected.

A 50-year-old man was shot in the chest during an attempted robbery on the city's Far South Side and a 22-year-old was struck in the leg by gunfire in the 5500 block of West Belmont Avenue on Sunday morning.

Meanwhile video showed a vehicle overturned at the intersection of Huron and Wells after the two people inside were shot during a car chase.

So far this year in Chicago, shooting incidents have seen a nine per cent spike, jumping to 3,221 from 2,960 in 2020.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot publicly backed the 'defund the police' movement and proposed slashing $59million from the CPD budget, or 3.3percent, and 600 vacant positions from the department, amid Black Lives Matter protests throughout the summer of 2020.

But she backtracked in August after police officer Ella French was shot dead and has now propose  a new plan to 'refund the police' with a $16.7billion spending plan that will boost funding for officers.

Police said one of the Thanksgiving weekend victims was found around 6:30pm on Sunday at the 8700 block of South Saginaw Avenue and was pronounced dead at the scene.

He had been shot several times in the back of his legs, police said, adding that they had not yet arrested anyone in connection with the case.

Meanwhile, a man was struck in the leg around 12:50am on Sunday morning in Cragin on the Northwest Side.

He was understood to be in a stable condition and was taken to Community First Hospital for treatment.

In a third shooting in a matter of hours, a man was shot around 9:40am on Sunday in Roseland on Chicago's Far South Side during an attempted robbery.

The 50-year-old was waiting at a bus stop in the 9300 block of South Calumet Avenue when he was approached by man who tried to rob him. He resisted and a fight erupted.

A passing car stopped to break up the fight and the suspected robber then pulled out gun, firing at the vehicle and the man as he fled the scene, ABC reported.

Police said victim was hit in the chest and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in a serious condition.

Other footage posted online showed a car that had flipped over at the intersection of Huron and Wells after the two people inside were shot.

Police said the accident happened after a car chase around 12:05am on Sunday morning.  Officers said there were reports of shots fired at Huron at Orleans and again at Huron and Hudson, where buildings were struck with bullets.

The two victims, 22 and 25, both received graze wounds to the face and the younger man was shot in the leg during the chase. The pair took themselves to Northwestern hospital where they were treated.

Police said they had not yet arrested anyone in the case.

Despite publicly supporting calls to 'defund the police', Chicago Mayor Lightfoot backtracked in August after the death of officer Ella French.

French was murdered while policing a traffic stop. Brothers Emonte, 21, and Eric Morgan, 22, were said to have been driving with expired license plates, prompting police to pull them over.

Her death was the first fatal shooting of a Chicago officer in the line of duty since Lightfoot took office and the first female officer fatally shot on the job there in 33 years.

Following the August killing, Lightfoot unveiled a new plan to 'refund the police' which lifted the Chicago Police Department's annual budget from $1.7billion to $1.9billion.

But about two weeks after the tragedy, over Labor Day weekend, Chicago was swept by another wave of violent crime that saw a four year-old boy die after he was shot twice in the head through a window of his dad's home while he slept.

WLS-TV reports that at least 47 people were shot, two fatally, in 12-hour time span across the city as Labor Day weekend kicked off, with young Mychal Moultry Jr. among those victims.

Moultry Jr. was sleeping at his father's home on the 6500 block of South Ellis around 9pm on September 3 when he was struck twice in the head by gunfire that came through the window from outside the residence, according to NBC Chicago.

The youngster was taken in critical condition to Comer Children's Hospital, and was declared deceased two days later, a Chicago Fire Department spokesman told the news outlet.

Elsewhere in the city, seven other children were among those injured in shootings over the holiday weekend, outraging residents citywide.

Among those seven children, two siblings, a 12-year-old boy and 15-year-old girl, were shot while attending a back-to-school picnic near an East Garfield Park gas station on Saturday, NBC Chicago reports.

Lightfoot has since denounced the 'defund the police' movement, but Chicago's police union since issued a vote of 'no confidence' in the mayor.

She is also at odds with police over a jab mandate that last month saw nearly 50 per cent of the force threatened with unpaid leave if they failed to declare their vaccinations status.

Violent crimes are up across the board in the Windy City. Since 2019, murders are up a whopping 59 per cent. Nearly 300 additional murders were committed in 2021 than in 2019.

The pandemic also inspired an influx of crime. Since 2020, murders are up by four percent. Violent assaults are also up, with over 200 more cases of aggravated battery taking place this year than in 2019, before the pandemic - with just over one month left to go.

Meanwhile sexual assaults and rapes are up by more than 27 per cent in the past year.

Yet gun violence is arguably the city's most pressing issue - with 1,606 people shot in this past summer alone - the population equivalent to many American small towns.

From June to August this year 261 Chicago citizens were killed, on pace to be the deadliest stretch in nearly a quarter-century for the city. In Chicago, fatal shootings accounted for 94 percent of all homicides so far this year - compared to the still-dismal 90 per cent in 2020.
