Ronan Farrow, the journalist who won the Pulitzer Prize for his work exposing disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, ripped Hachette Book Group, the publisher for his book “Catch and Kill,” for not informing him of their work on Woody Allen’s memoir, his estranged father whom he believes molested his younger sister, Dylan Farrow.
“I was disappointed to learn through press reports that Hachette, my publisher, acquired Woody Allen’s memoir after other major publishers refused to do so and concealed the decision from me and its own employees while we were working on ‘Catch and Kill’ – a book about how powerful men, including Woody Allen, avoid accountability for sexual abuse,” Farrow said in a statement on Twitter.
“Hachette did not fact check the Woody Allen book. My sister Dylan has never been contacted to respond to any denial or mischaracterization of the abuse she suffered at the hands of Woody Allen – a credible allegation, maintained for almost three decades, backed up by contemporaneous accounts and evidence,” Farrow continued. “It’s wildly unprofessional in multiple obvious directions for Hachette to behave this way.”
Ronan Farrow concluded by saying that Hachette acted unethically for not fact-checking Woody Allen’s book and that he cannot work with them in good conscience.
“I’ve encouraged Hachette, out of respect for its readers, authors and reputation, to conduct a thorough fact check of Woody Allen’s account, in particular any claim that implies my sister is not telling the truth,” Farrow said. ”I’ve also told Hachette that a publisher that would conduct itself in this way is one I can’t work with in good conscience.”
Since 1993, Dylan Farrow has maintained that Woody Allen sexually molested her while he dated her mother, Mia Farrow. Allen has emphatically denied the accusation, claiming that Mia coached Dylan as part of a vicious custody dispute. The charges were ultimately dismissed by authorities and Moses Farrow, Dylan’s brother, has defended Allen’s innocence while asserting that Mia was the abusive one.
“So many times I saw my mother try to convince her that she was abused – and it has worked,” Moses Farrow said in 2018. “Some day, I hope Dylan can escape from my mother, confront the truth and begin her own healing.”
“What breaks my heart the most is while I know that my sister, Dylan, believes what she says, I also know from my own experience, that it simply never happened,” he continued. “I’m deeply saddened for my sister. As she stated, this has been her reality since childhood. I have broken my silence of the abuse by our mother and my healing began after getting away from her. I can only hope that my sister can do the same to finally heal.”
Dylan Farrow also blasted Hachette for choosing to run with Woody Allen’s memoir, which was passed over by many publishers.
“Hachette’s publishing of Woody Allen’s memoir is deeply upsetting to me personally and an utter betrayal of my brother, whose brave reporting, capitalized on by Hachette, gave voice to numerous survivors of sexual assault by powerful men,” Dylan Farrow said on Monday.
