You don’t need to be a marriage or wedding expert to know that there are certain things that are expected when it comes to planning a wedding. You need to talk venues, guest lists, food and most importantly, the dress/tux situation. And while the serious conversations take place between the engagement and the actual date, the reality is, you should already have a sense of all this shit before you even pop the question or say yes. Cause if you get to this point, and there are huge surprises and misunderstandings like this, then you’re well and truly fucked.
Like this dude in the following Reddit Am I the Asshole? thread. Not only did he ask his fiancee to cheap out on her dress, the then took to the internet to ask their opinion. Then ignored it.
He deserves to fly solo for the rest of his life.

The crux of the debate is that he thinks that she shouldn’t spend $1,000+ on a dress that she’ll wear once. And, that the money will be coming out of a $6K surplus that they have in their wedding fund.
Meanwhile, he’s wearing his dad’s tux. I’m already throwing a flag on this play. I get a tux is timeless, but this is your wedding.
I already hate this guy. Also, at 38, you should be smarter than this.

Then, the idiot doubles down.
My favourite line is “I thought she would be ecstatic to learn there are identical dresses for a fraction of the cost.” That’s because she knows they’re crap, you asshat.
Even if she and her mom pay for it out of pocket, he still says no.

Comparing her to a toddler’s a sweet touch. This guy’s a fucking charmer. I’d marry him.
He clearly has no family/friends/support structure to lean on, because they’d have told him he was an idiot before he took to the internet. Saved him some wrath.
Instead, he’s a laughing stock. They didn’t hold back.

The point about the tux is fair but still. I had a bespoke suit made for my wedding because I wanted it to be something unique and special.
It’s definitely not something you’ll find on Wish.

Great suggestions here for finding a lower cost, but still meaningful, alternative.

This dude’s got it right. Even a suit for that cost is going to be shit.
What the hell does OP do for work?

The scrapbook should have been the first clue that she’s not fucking around when it comes to her dress.
Never argue with a scrapbook.

Actually getting a decent education in how much of a hellhole Wish really is.

Considering that shit like this is a staple of our Expection vs. Reality galleries, we know a thing or two about lying online.

Yep. Dude’s probably not a fan of our site, or he’d be educated on shit like this.
That’s alright. Not everyone can be as cool as us.

This comment hits the nail right on the head. Dude’s a controlling douche canoe.

Now we’re getting serious.

Now, our OP jumps into the conversation.
Josh, just shut the fuck up bro. You’re making it worse. You don’t know how badly you fucked up, and you can’t face it.
Oh, and also, you asked for this by taking your dirty laundry to Reddit.

I don’t think everyone’s missing the point about it being only one day. We are familiar with how weddings work.
Apparently, you aren’t.

Oh shit. Now he’s in trouble.

Ready for a trainwreck, folks? I sure as shit, am.

Honestly, this advice could have come sooner, in the first few comments.
But now that he’s been booked, let’s see what happens.

Oh? It’s our fault that you’re in trouble? Really dude?

Ok, granted we don’t know everything, but there’s more to the story than just the dress issue. She’s got to have gotten hints of his behaviour before.
Then again, blaming Whiskey isn’t a good sign either.

At this point, the wise folks of Reddit have stopped talking to whats-his-nuts, and started talking to Emma.
Looks like we have a therapist/counsellor in the room or at least someone who’s familiar with the process, because this is what grown ups should do.

Holy shit, this poster is wise.

And cue the ban and the angry PM’s to people. Is guy for real?
I mean, I get that he knows he fucked up, but his behaviour shows no willingness to compromise or learn from his mistakes.

Here’s the message that Josh sent to this wise commenter.
What a fucking tool.

Honestly, I’m not surprised that the Reddit community was able to help.

Finally, Emma makes an appearance, and with the best user name of all.
She’s called it off. And not a moment too soon.
She then made a different user name, and posted the truth. You wouldn’t guess it, but the story gets a little more fucked up.

Taking to r/relationships since r/AITA was gatekeeping, she lays down the truth.
First thing to note are the ages. He claimed he was 38 while she was 27. She’s got something different.
I’m gonna go with Emma on this one.

Lies, lies and more lies.
Holy shit, Josh. You really are something.

He’s definitely not all there.

How indeed, Emma? I don’t know if there even is being calm in a situation like this.
I’d definitely finish this relationship in person, with people on your side there in case he gets angry and just do the adult thing. You’ll cry, he’ll yell, then beg, then you walk away and find someone who’ll respect you.

Honestly, no one needs to deal with this shit. Fake accounts, vile PMs, character assassination in public, etc..
Just talk like grownups, m’kay?
